- Captain Hastings is invalided out of the Great War and goes to convalesce at Styles Court, the family home of his great friend, John Cavendish. Mrs Inglethorp, mistress of Styles Court, is murdered. When the Captain was in Belgium, he was greatly impressed by a brilliant little retired detective with an egg-shaped head -- the redoubtable Hercule Poirot. By an extraordinary coincidence, Poirot is billeted in the nearby village, and his interest is piqued by the tragic death
