- Summary
- Effie Davis is a modern young woman, educated and independent. And for a free-spirited woman in Melbourne in 1896 there is much to fight for, causes like universal suffrage and equal pay for women. But Effie's principles and beliefs become far more than academic when a chance meeting with baby Alfie in her St Kilda boarding house triggers a chain of events that exposes her to the seedier side of marvellous Melbourne. And she steels herself to fight for another just cause: the rights of young mothers separated from their babies through economic hardship and an uncaring State. A lost baby, a desperate single mother, and legal and welfare systems that seem totally ineffective to deal with a tragic mistake. But is it just hopeless bureaucracy to blame, or something far more sinister at work here? It's school holidays for the young ladies at Merton Hall and Effie, together with her charming and equally enlightened fellow teacher, Michael Standish, use their holidays to redress a wrong and reunite a mother with her child. But all is not quite as it seems, and Effie is never quite sure who she should trust and who she should believe in. At first the law seems uncaring and unresponsive. But perhaps Detective Sergeant Harry Holloway is not quite as casual and lackadaisical as he initially seems. And what has become of baby Alfie? The dreadful spectres of baby-farming and infanticide cast a dark shadow over Effie, and death and danger are always close at hand, as she struggles to uncover the truth
