- Summary
- My Fault Reveals Mussolini as Anxiety-Ridoen, Often Fearful, Yet Possessing Political Genius and Hungering for Power and Fame. He skillfully maneuvered his way to govern Italy, then imposed a new form of tyranny Sarfatti and he had conceived: Fascism. After ten years of rule, however, Mussolini suddenly found himself facing Hiller, his admirer-yet his rival. As Nazi Germany gathered strength, Mussolini managed to check Hitler for a time. But when Hitler gave Mussolini a personal tour of the Third Reich in late 1937, the envious but overawed Duce recognized German might. He succumbed to the Führer's seductive but false promise to divide Europe between them. The next year, Mussolini allowed Hitler to seize Austria in March, supported German dismemberment of Czechoslovakia at Munich in September, then aped Nazi anti-Semitic laws in November. Sarfatti despaired, fled, and then wrote her account of what she had witnessed. Even if the Sarfatti family archive in ever opened to reveal the thousand letters Mussolini sent to his lover, My Fault will remain the most revealing portrait of the Duce. This edition, compiled from several English-language manuscripts and a Spanish serialization published in an obscure Argentine newspaper, presents the man behind the façade erected by Fascist propaganda. My Fault reveals Mussolini as riddled with disease, sexually manic, boastful, vindictive, and cunning, yet deeply insecure. No one but Sarfatti could present such candid first hand observations of the dictator and his associates
