- In May of 1998, there was another bloody episode of riots and violence against the ethnic Chinese community in Indonesia. Lampion Merah Putish (The Red and White Lantern) is a semi-fictional love story based on the events of May 1998. The two central characters, Lili Wijaya, a young ethnic Chinese woman, and Wadi Moniaga, a native Indonesian from Java meet in college and embark on a fateful interracial romance, in the face of disapproving parents and their own initial prejudices toward each other, they eventually surrender to love, but after overcoming many ups and downs together, their story culminates with Lili's rape at the hands of rioters during the violence against the Chinese. The trauma of the event tests the strength of their love to the limit. Mei 1998, sekali lagi sebuah episode berdarah atas etnis Keturunan Tionghoa dipentaskan di tanah air. Lampion Merah Putih adalah sebuah novel semi-fiksi bernuansa romance yang mengambil latar peristiwa bersejarah ini dengan dua tokoh sentral: Lili Wijaya, perempuan keturunan asal Jakarta dan Wadi Moniaga, lelaki etnis Jawa asal Semarang. Tema novel ini adalah kisah kehidupan dan percintaan antar-etnis di Indonesia yang penuh gejolak dengan kulminasi pada insiden pemerkosaan oleh oknum perusuh. Aliran nasib mempertemukan kedua manusia dengan latar belakang berbeda bagaikan langit dan bumi ini di bangku kuliah. Setelah melewati fase pertemuan awal yang sarat friksi, pengingkaran perasaan dan akhirnya, refleksi batin atas arti kehidupan, kedua insan ini akhirnya menyerahkan diri sepenuhnya pada cinta. Perjalanan kisah kasih kedua sejoli ini dihempas berbagai cobaan berat, dimulai dari ketidaksetujuan orang tua Lili atas hubungannya dengan Wadi karena praduga ras, hingga peristiwa penganiyayaan dan pemerkosaan Lili pada waktu Kerusuhan Mei 1998 di Jakarta.
