- Summary
- As a surgeon and a human being, dealing with donors can be psychologically confronting. To plunder a human body for their organs can be pretty ghoulish, if you think about it too much. I manage to get through adult donors OK. I try not to look at their faces and think only of the recipient they are helping. People die, it is a fact of life. Think about it anymore and it gets too personal and does your head in. As a female surgeon, Dr Kellee Slater works in one of the most demanding areas of surgery, liver transplantation. In this inspiring, heartbreaking and blackly funny memoir Kellee opens up the fast-paced world of donor surgery. She takes us with her as she flies across the Rockies in winter to collect transplant organs, rushes out of a department store change room to save the life of a toddler who is choking to death, and ? horrifyingly ? tells the wrong father in a hospital waiting room that there is no hope for his daughter
