- Summary
- William Whittlestaff lost the woman he loved to a richer, more lively rival many years before. He now lives alone at Croker Hall with his vociferous housekeeper Mrs Baggett. An old friend dies, leaving a now-orphanned daughter, Mary Lawrie. Whittlestaff takes her in as a ward, and as predicted by the more worldly Mrs Baggett, he falls in love with her. Mary is a quiet type, who has warmed to the old bachelor ; her previous love interest, John Gordon, a penniless Oxford student was sent away by her step-mother as a bad prospect. Mary accepts Whittlestaff's proposal, but John Gordon arrives on the scene, replete with a newly-earned fortune based on diamond-mining. He would also like to marry Mary
