Summary
This program looks at the art works that were created in the year; 1812. During this year, Napoleon was about to invade Russia and many other countries in Europe longed to be free from him. In Germany, the Brothers Grimm published their collection of fairytales in 1812 and in Japan, the artist Hokusai, famous for his many depictions of Mount Fuji, creates Pictures of the Floating World. In Sydney, Australia, the convict, Francis Greenway, becomes the colony's first chief architect and earns his freedom through hard work. In Spain, Goya goes against the depiction of warfare as being heroic and creates images that are urgent, brutal and without hope. In western Canada, the Haida Indians give life to their spiritual traditions through carvings in metal, stone and wood.
