Summary
This program looks at the art works that were created in the year; 1603. It was a year of regime change in two great nations. In Japan, civil war ended and the Tokugawa Shogunate began, and in London, James I became King of England with the death of Elizabeth I. In December, the Sultan Mehmed III, head of the mighty Ottoman Empire died in Constantinople and his successor, Akbar was considered one of history's most lavish patrons of the arts. For more than thirty years, he commissioned buildings, manuscripts and artworks. On the other side of the world, Miguel Cervantes wrote Don Quixote from his gaol cell in La Mancha.
