Summary
In this timely and provocative book, Tim Dunlop argues that by embracing the changes ahead we might even find ourselves better off. Workless goes beyond the gadgetry and hype to examine the social and political ramifications of work throughout history and into the future. It argues we need to think big now, not wait until we're in a dystopian world of mass unemployment and wealth held in the hands of a minority
Summary
Dunlop seeks to understand the relationship between the technologies that are reshaping our connections with each other and the natural world, and our ability to control them. Today there is a globalized labor market where there are more workers than there are jobs, with a workforce who is engaged in increasingly insecure work. He particularly addresses the area of work and what it means to live in a world where technology is increasingly automating many common jobs. On the premise that the world is already on the road to worklessness, he asks: Is the fact that a robot will take my job a good thing or a bad thing? His answer: A future without work can, potentially, be a good thing. He also explores at length the effects the neoliberalism agenda has had globally.
