- This article examines the relationship between religious beliefs and human rights. The author argues that male misinterpretation of the original religious teachings have led to crimes against women in some Hindu and Islamic cultures. Crimes such as physical abuse and dowry killings which are not justified by religious scriptures. The author examines passages from the Qur'an and the Hindu scriptures which support the equality of men and women and value the role of women in society. Curriculum Area: Society and Culture
