Summary
The Ramsay family with their eight children and assorted guests are taking their holiday in the Hebrides. In the passing of a single day, many tensions arise: in particular Mr Ramsay tyrannically thwarts the hopes of his son James who wishes to go the lighthouse. The voyage finally takes place years later, after the war has wreaked havoc on the family. Then, in a spirit of loss, bereavement and forgiveness, the pilgrimage is made. At once a vivid impressionist depiction of a family holiday, and a meditation on a marriage, on parenthood and childhood. Its use of stream of consciousness, reminiscence and shifting perspectives gives the novel a poetic essence, and at the time of publication in 1927 it represented an utter rejection of Victorian and Edwardian literary values
