  • Grades 10-12 Four years ago, the alien Luxen invaded Earth. Four years ago, there was a war. Four years ago, Evie lost her father to the violence between humans and the supernaturally perfect aliens. Now, living with just her army colonel mother, she prefers a boring life—staying home, watching dumb movies, and staging artistic Instagram shots. When an illicit visit to a 21-and-over Luxen club leads to an encounter with the hunky and mysterious Luc, Evie’s chance at boring disappears forever. Their love-hate relationship starts off innocently enough, but Evie finds out soon that she and Luc are inextricably linked, and what that means for her future is terrifying and unclear. There may be more to the Luxen than she ever knew, and learning about them will turn her world upside down. Armentrout doesn’t stray far from her sf-romance base, though there are threads of action-adventure and political intrigue woven into this story. A must for older-teen and new-adult readers. -- Stacey Comfort (Reviewed 9/14/2018) (Booklist, vol 115, number 1)
  • This science fiction drama picks up four years after the events of Armentrout’s Lux series. Aliens known as the Luxen have launched a failed invasion of Earth, and humans have entered into an uneasy, fragile peace with those Luxen who chose integration rather than conflict. When 17-year-old Evie Dasher accompanies a friend to a nightclub where humans and aliens can mingle, she’s inadvertently drawn into a terrifying mystery in which she discovers that many aspects of her life are false. The aggravating and oh-so-sexy Luc insinuates himself into her life at every turn, and Evie can’t get away from the Luxen, as much as she’d prefer to continue her quiet life as an ordinary high schooler. But she may need Luc if she wants to survive the attentions of a superpowered killer. While this series opener draws heavily on the events and premise of the previous series, it works as an entry point for new readers. Unfortunately, Luc comes across as more annoying than appealing, and the constant string of surprise revelations may test the limits of plausibility. Ages 13–up.
