Summary
This is a compelling new mystery for Libertus, set against the backdrop of the Roman Empire in turmoil...An astonishing new order has usurped power in Rome and the reverberations are reaching even to Glevum, where the legion is preparing to depart. Libertus' wealthy patron, until recently one of the most influential men in the Empire, finds himself not only deprived of the privilege and protection he had previously enjoyed, but under actual threat both from the political establishment in Rome and from an anonymous and vindictive enemy much closer to home. The murder of another councillor, similarly placed, makes the matter urgent. Libertus, whose humbler status affords obscurity, is charged with spiriting Marcus' young family away to a place of safety. But his task will bring problems of its own, as Libertus uncovers a grisly secret and an ancient crime - with ramifications stretching to the present day

Review
It’s AD 193 in Roman Britain. Libertus, a former slave who has been granted Roman citizenship, has been summoned by his patron, Marcus Septimus Aurelius. When Libertus arrives, he finds Marcus in a highly agitated state because he has received an anonymous threat to his life and those of his family. Unsure who might have sent the threat, Marcus commands Libertus to spirit his wife and children out of the city and away from potential danger. Then Libertus is to find out who sent the threat and why. Smuggling a prominent family out of the city is no easy trick, but it’s small potatoes compared to the investigation that follows, which results in the unearthing of a dark secret involving a deadly murder, a vengeful woman, and a hidden treasure. A clever plot—with wry humor, suspense, and intriguing descriptions of life in ancient Britain—plus a remarkable hero make this a superb read for historical-mystery buffs, and especially for followers of Ruth Downie’s Ruso-and-Tilla series. -- Melton, Emily (Reviewed 5/1/2016) (Booklist, vol 112, number 17, p31)
