Summary
A UNSW economics professor has proposed the establishment of a "people's bank" to increase competition and loosen the big four's stranglehold on the Australian public. A community debate whether to increase regulation of the banking industry was sparked last week after the Commonwealth Bank's raising of interest rates by 0.45 per cent, almost double the Reserve Bank's official 0.25 per cent hike. The Gillard Government is this week expected to announce a plan to force the banks to dump fees of up to $900 for customers who choose to switch banks, but many believe this measure is not enough. Prof Frank Zumbo called for establishment of a "people's bank" and hosed down claims that attempts to increase competition could upset an industry that carried the country through a global financial crisis relatively unscathed
