Summary
Cloves and nutmeg are indigenous to the Spice Islands of Eastern Indonesia. This intriguing book tells of the many uses of these exotic spices and the history of their trade over period of more than 2,000 years
Summary
For general readers, Burnet, who has lived, worked, and traveled in the Indonesian archipelago as a geologist and geophysicist, traces the uses and trade history of exotic spices from the Spice Islands of Eastern Indonesia over a period of 2000 years. He describes the route and the Silk Road; how the trade in Europe became dominated by Middle Eastern and Venetian merchants; the rivalry between the Sultans of Ternate and Tidore and their relationship with various Europeans who occupied the Islands at different times; how explorers like Columbus, Vasco da Gama, and Magellan aimed to capture the trade by sailing directly to the Islands, driving maritime exploration and the "Age of Discovery;" the evolution of the Dutch and English East India Companies; and the roles of Sir Francis Drake, Jan Pieterzoon Coen, Pierre Poivre, and lesser-known figures.
