Summary
In 1995, highly-acclaimed Indigenous filmmaker Ivan Sen recorded the lives of four Indigenous 15-year-olds growing up in rural New South Wales. They discussed their future hopes and dreams with Ivan and prepared to leave the shelter of their families to begin the journey into adulthood. Shifting Shelter became the first of three 7Up style documentaries filmed in five year instalments. The individuals are: Willy, who at 15 dreamt of becoming a professional singer and getting into university. At 20, he's moved to Toowoomba, had a son and is still hoping to become a professional singer. Cindy loved her art and was determined to finish Year 12 with good marks in her HSC. When the program revisits her in 2000, she has completed her HSC and given birth to a daughter. She hopes to take up art again. 15-year-old Danielle was in trouble with the police. She dreamt of getting a job and some day travelling to America. In 2000, Danielle speaks from inside a correction centre, she's been taking drugs since she was 16 and hopes to beat them while inside. Ben moved into town and gained employment as an apprentice automotive finisher (spray painter), he writes original songs, and believes in 10 years he'll be touring the world. In Shifting Shelter 3, it's 2005 and Ivan meets with the four individuals for a third time. The program recaps Ivan's earlier visits with Willy, Cindy, Danielle and Ben and looks at the turbulent journey they have faced since the first program was made. Now ten years since they first met, dreams are remembered and forgotten, while new hopes evolve as they build new shelters for their own families.--Kanopy
