Summary
What has happened on Nauru and Manus since Australia began its most recent offshore processing regime in 2012? This essential book provides a comprehensive and uncompromising overview of the first three years of offshore processing since it recommenced in 2012. It explains why offshore processing was re-established, what life is like for asylum seekers and refugees on Nauru and Manus, what asylum seekers, refugees and staff in the offshore detention centres have to say about what goes on there, and why the truth has been so hard to find. In doing so, it goes behind the rumours and allegations to reveal what is known - and what still is not known - about Australia's offshore detention centres
Summary
While the early years of the Indochinese refugee crisis (beginning in 1976) would become a period of unmatched openness and generosity in Australia?s treatment of people fleeing persecution in the region, few asylum seekers arriving by boat after that time would receive such a welcome. Gleeson tells the story of the first three years of off-shore processing since its reintroduction in August 2012. During this time more than 4,000 men, women and children--including babies--have been sent to detention centers on Nauru and Manus Island in Papua, New Guinea ostensibly to await the processing of their asylum claims. Fleeing persecution and other serious threats to their lives and safety, they came originally from countries including Afghanistan, Albania, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Malaysia, Palestine, Sudan, and Syria. He cites a wealth of information on the public record now about what is going on offshore consisting of written evidence and oral testimony provided to numerous government inquiries, whistleblower accounts, videos, photographs, and letters smuggled off the two islands, reports from international organizations and monitors, newspaper articles, government reports and statements, and media releases. She aims to inform the Australian public about what is known to be true and encourage people to question what is being done in their name, with their money, to people seeking their help.
