Summary
An after-school community sporting group aimed at keeping children active will survive another year thanks to a continuation of federal government funding. The Active After-School Communities program, which services 23 local schools, including La Perouse primary and 850 local children, welcomed the announcement of $43.5 million to continue its program at least until 2012. The program provides children with a positive introduction to sport. Without the program, more than 90 per cent of participating children would not be engaged in structured physical activity after school. It has been successful in building pathways for Australian children and their families to establish a lifelong participation in sport through local sporting clubs
