- It's almost as hard to get into Supermax as it is to get out. This 21st century jail-within-a-jail is exclusively reserved for the most sinister of criminals. It holds just 34 of Australia's 24,000 prisoners... a Who's Who of crime that includes serial backpacker killer Ivan Milat, political assassin Phuong Ngo and Lebanese gang leader and triple murderer Michael Kanaan. Together, these 34 men are responsible for 55 known murders and face sentences totalling 613 years plus 20 natural life terms. Supermax, aka the High Risk Management Unit at Goulburn in southern NSW, is also at the very heart of Australia's counter-terrorism strategy. Under proposed arrangements, accused terrorists may soon be shipped from interstate and wake up in the purpose-built Supermax. After persistent requests to NSW Corrective Services authorities, Four Corners obtained permission to film inside this secretive and forbidding place
