Summary
Across most of the world, an entire generation has lived free from the spectre of polio, but for fifty years during the twentieth century that fear was overwhelming. Dancing in My Dreams investigates the disease of polio and its treatment over a long period, the scientific endeavour that led to the discovery of the poliovirus, and the early studies in virology and immunology that culminated in the production of a polio vaccine. For the first time, in a history of this disease, the voice of the polio survivor can also be clearly heard

Summary
Highley presents this story of polio in the twentieth century, focusing on the experience of Australia and particularly the differing treatment approaches of Dr. Jean Macnamara and Sister Elizabeth Kenny prior to the Second World War and the first polio vaccine. Following an introduction to the material, sociological and personal narratives interweave. The book moves from initial symptom presentation and persistent misconceptions about transmission to the hospital experiences of acute polio and convalescence for children and adults. Next discussed is the medico-legal edifice around polio and its relation to moralistic discourses regarding disease transmission as it was noted that Western countries, including Australia, had increasingly severe epidemics of polio even as other infectious diseases declined. This chapter begins to elaborate the conventional medical perspective of Dr. Macnamara. Sister Kenny is then introduced and her background, patient-empowering physiotherapy methods, and differential success in Australia and the US are discussed. The story returns to the psychological experience of patients both in and after the hospital before wrapping up with a discussion of how medicine advanced after the polio vaccine and the present threat of resurgence due to undervaccination.
