Summary
A desire to preserve the unique charm and history of Coogee has inspired a fierce campaign in Sydney's east. The owners of the Coogee Bay Hotel sparked outrage last December when they released plans to develop the site on the corner of Coogee Bay Rd and Arden St. An initial resident reaction has since been harnessed into an effective campaign that has gained the support of local MP Paul Pearce, Liberal Party candidate for Coogee Bruce Notley-Smith and Randwick Council. Meanwhile, the Coogee precinct committee, which has spearheaded the campaign, has managed to gather signatures from almost 16,000 people opposed to the development, creating what is believed to be the largest single petition ever to be brought before both houses of the state parliament
