Summary
Crossing the English Channel is a daunting prospect for the most experienced of swimmers. But for Brenton Barker, having just eight months to prepare for the attempt has only added to the challenge. Barker left for England on Saturday and is expected to attempt the swim between September 29 and October 5. After riding his bike across China in 2008 and from London to Istanbul in 2009, Barker, 28, from Maroubra, was looking for a new challenge that would push his boundaries. Despite never swimming competitively, he chose the Channel "partly because it is totally foreign to me". Motivated by his goal to raise $50,000 for Father Chris Riley's Youth Off The Streets, Barker has spent the past eight months training as much as 18 hours in the pool each week
